Getting to Nanjing

Nanjing is centrally located on China's high-speed rail network, only 1.5 hours from Shanghai and 3.5 hours from Beijing.

By Air. Nanjing Lukou International Airport (NKG) serves domestic and international flights, including direct routes from major Asian hubs such as Tokyo, Seoul, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taipei. The airport is about 30 minutes by taxi from the conference hotel. For budget travellers, Metro Line S1 connects the airport to Nanjing South Railway Station (about 40 minutes), from where Metro Line 1 takes you directly to Sheng Tai Lu Station, 3 minutes' walk from the hotel.

By High-Speed Rail. Nanjing has two major railway stations:

• Nanjing South Railway Station (南京南站) – one of the largest high-speed rail hubs in China, about 10 minutes from the hotel by taxi or Metro Line 1. Frequent G-trains run between Nanjing South and Shanghai Hongqiao (~1–1.5 h) and Beijing South (~3.5 h).
• Nanjing Railway Station (南京站) – in the north of the city, about 40 minutes from the hotel. Served by Metro Lines 1 and 3.

Getting Around. Nanjing has an extensive metro network covering all major sights and districts. Tickets can be purchased at stations or by scanning the Alipay / WeChat QR code at the gates. Taxis and ride-hailing apps (e.g. Didi) are widely available; most drivers accept mobile payment.

History. Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, blends ancient heritage as a former capital with modern innovation. It is one of China's four great ancient capitals, having served as the capital of six dynasties (Wu, Eastern Jin, Song, Qi, Liang and Chen), the early capital of the Ming Dynasty, and the capital of the Republic of China. In 2019 UNESCO designated Nanjing a City of Literature, honouring its rich literary tradition. The well-preserved Ming City Wall, more than 600 years old, still encircles much of the old city.

Geography. Nanjing is situated on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, backed by the Purple Mountain (Zijin Shan). It is centrally located on China's high-speed rail network, only 1.5 hours from Shanghai and 3.5 hours from Beijing, making it an ideal gateway for exploring eastern China.

• Confucius Temple (夫子庙) and Qinhuai River – the city's most famous historic quarter, with ancient temples, traditional markets and evening river cruises along the Qinhuai River.
• Xuanwu Lake (玄武湖) – a large scenic urban lake with five islets, parkland and pavilions, located just beside Nanjing Railway Station.
• Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum (中山陵) – the grand memorial of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, set on the forested slopes of Purple Mountain.
• Nanjing Museum (南京博物院) – one of China's largest and finest museums, in the city centre.
• Presidential Palace (总统府) – a historic palace-garden complex that witnessed key chapters of modern Chinese history.
• Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum (明孝陵) – the tomb of the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Purple Mountain.
